In the Minnesota School Bus Operator's Association October newsletter, they have compiled a list of suggested best practices from their members on ideas of how to prevent an H1N1 outbreak. Here are some of the ideas they came up with:
- Provide drivers with alcohol based hand sanitizer
- Encourage and/or provide a flu shot clinic for all school bus drivers when available
- Educate and make drivers aware of how to stay healthy in the workplace and to be alert for H1N1 symptoms
- Wipe down steering wheels, handrails and seats with a disinfectant rag or spray
- Wipe down common areas in the drivers' room and office
- Encourage drivers who feel ill to stay at home and seek medical attention when necessary
- Cross train employees or hire more substitute drivers
- When possible, encourage drivers to open windows and roof hatches to increase air flow in the bus
- Conduct active screening of employees who appear to be ill. Send sick employees home
