For Valentine’s Day, the American School Bus Council sent an email to school transportation operations across the nation that highlights how to attract the attention of media while holding “Love the Bus” events in their local areas.

A toolkit distributed earlier this week included a templated press release and a fact sheet that school districts and private bus companies can customize in announcing driver appreciation events and other celebrations of the yellow school bus. The Love the Bus program was developed by ASBC in 2007 to raise awareness about school bus transportation and safety by recognizing the men and women who drive more than 26 million children each school day on more than 480,000 buses across the nation.

This month, students are being encouraged to write and submit testimonials on the difference their bus driver makes in their life. Those testimonials will be featured on www.lovethebus.com. In addition, children will prepare Valentine’s Day cards for their drivers in appreciation of their service.

The fact sheet contained in the Love the Bus toolkit includes school bus safety lessons for children and their parents. In addition to providing the press release template, the fact sheet also offers recommendations to schools for increasing outreach to parents, informing them of the inherent safety record, efficiency and convenience of the yellow bus.

Members of the online social networking site Facebook were also invited to visit the ASBC oage and add the organization as a friend. After logging in or creating a free account, members can use the site's search function to locate the page.
