South Dakota Association Helps Drive Legislation PDF Print E-mail

The South Dakota School Transportation Association is seeing the fruits of its labor in the form after a law signed on March 5 allows diabetic drivers who inject insulin to keep the school bus endorsement on their commercial driver’s license. The bill was first proposed by SDSTA during the 2008 legislative session, but it died in the senate transportation committee.
“The SDSTA believes that this legislation is an important tool to help with the problem of school bus driver shortages and retention,” wrote SDSTA President Tim Steichen in a recent letter. “The legislation allows an individual that is otherwise qualified to apply for the waiver by going through an intensive medical evaluation and by having a yearly evaluation to retain the school bus endorsement.“
