School Bus, Inc., in Sioux Falls, S.D., reminded newsletter readers about the importance of being prepared for emergency evacuations. The article stated that evacuating passengers from a school bus in an emergency is a necessary action, but drivers must also remember that not all emergency situations require evacuation. In many cases, passengers are safer by remaining onboard. Each emergency situation should be evaluated to determine the best action to take. The article listed several factors that will determine the need for evacuations: the location of the bus following a crash, the drivability of the bus, and the type of emergency situation. Most state laws require that students participate in bus evacuation drills at some time during the school year. The article recommends that students, teachers, chaperones and others who ride the bus less frequently, or who may be unfamiliar with the driver or vehicle, should also be instructed on emergency procedures and evacuation.
