Applications are being accepted through Dec. 15 for $3.4 million in grants for community and school programs that promote environmental stewardship, and school districts and transportation departments are encouraged to apply.

An EPA spokesperson confirmed that cleaner school bus engine emissions and the Safe Routes to School Program are merely two of the types of educational outreach projects eligible for the grants ranging from $5,000 to $200,000 each. In all, EPA said it expects to award 100 grants nationwide. The program has existed since 1992 and has awarded a total of $45 million to more than 3,000 agencies and organizations.

A review of previous winners listed on EPA’s Web site from 1992 through 2008 reveals that 562 grants for more than $5 million has been awarded directly to schools, school districts or school boards for a variety of programs. Additionally, school transportation departments can partner with local government agencies, non-profits and state government agencies for grant money. Also eligible for funds are tribal education and non-profit organizations.
