Thomas Built Buses opens the 2011 Children's Choice School Bus Driver of the Year essay contest to submissions.
Started in 2006 in celebration of Thomas' 90th anniversary, the essay contest gives students a chance to write about their favorite bus drivers and explain why he/she should be selected as the School Bus Driver of the Year. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade are eligible to enter by submitting an essay of at least 90 words that explains what makes their bus driver so special.
Last year's winners, Chancellor Coger and his driver Lester LeMasters from Monongalia County Schools in Morgantown, W.V., brought an even greater spotlight to the issue of bullying. Coger had been getting bullied at the bus stop by another student and LeMasters decided to drop them off on opposite sides of the street to help end the bullying incidents. Coger also sat on the bullying panel at the 2010 NAPT Summit and showed attendees how difficult bullying can be on children.
The essays will be judged on content, originality and driver qualifications and must be postmarked by Friday, July 1. For more information, visit the Thomas site.
