The award is one of the most sought-after prizes in the safety industry. KellerOnline began awarding the SPOTY in 2002 to recognize professionals in the industry who have taken innovative approaches to increasing the level of safety awareness and promoting the creation of a safer workplace. Throughout its history, the award has been given to safety professionals at organizations of all sizes and within various industries. Each award winner has implemented highly successful programs to reduce various metrics, including accident rates, injuries, workers' compensation costs, and more.

Each year, SPOTY awardees are selected from hundreds of applicants representing companies of all sizes and a wide variety of industries. Past recipients include safety professionals from the manufacturing, transportation, construction, and mining sectors.

The first prize winner will be awarded over $10,000 in cash and prizes, including $2,500 cash, a plaque, certificate, free one-year subscriptions to KellerOnline for both the winner and their staff (10 seats maximum), and $1,200 in free online training. The second prize winner will be awarded $500, a plaque, certificate, and a free one-year subscription to KellerOnline. The third prize winner will be awarded $50, a plaque, certificate, and a free one-year subscription to KellerOnline.
