Robert "Bob" Pape will serve as the new president of the New York School Bus Contractors Association, the board of directors announced.

A past president of National Association of Pupil Transportation from 2001 through 2002, Pape has served on the NYSBCA Board of Directors since 2007 and has been a member of the Association since 2005. Pape is also the Finance chair for the National School Transportation Association.

Pape was officially voted into office in February. His current terms will expire in October 2015.

He started in the student transportation industry nearly 40 years ago at Hendrickson Bus Corporation. He has since been the director of transportation for Lawrence Public Schools and is currently partner and officer secretary with Dell Transportation in Port Washington, N.Y.

NYSBCA referred to Pape as "a leading authority on student transportation." He has served as a school transportation and financial consultant to numerous local, state, and national associations, along with school districts, private sector operations and governmental agencies. He also was a co-founder of the NAPT Foundation and in 2008 received the NAPT Distinguished Service Award. Pape was the first president of the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute.

"I'm thrilled and honored to head the New York School Bus Contractors Association and to continue spreading the message on the benefits of private pupil transportation in New York," said Pape in a statement. "Now, more than ever, it's important for School Districts and taxpayers to know that we are providing, and will continue to provide, the safest, most reliable, and cost-effective pupil transportation services available today.

Pape said the association is focused on increasing school bus safety initiatives, encouraging more school districts to utilize private transportation services and to see an elimination of the state and local sales tax on school buses in New York.

"Providing a safe ride to school and back home for over a million children every day is the single most important thing we do as school bus contractors," said Pape. "Our goal as an Association has been, and will continue to be, to deliver the best pupil transportation services in the country."
