The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office near Philadelphia presented Latoya Walston with the Citizen Hero Award for safely evacuating her students from her school bus after it was hit by a car in May 2013. The award was given to local individuals who rise "above and beyond the call of duty in their everyday lives."

Walston received the award last week in Delran, N.J. She is a First Student employee who transports students for the Burlington Township School District. She joined First Student's Berlin team in 2009.

Following the crash and during the evacuation, and even after, the office said Walston remained calm and focused as she comforted the students.

"Our drivers place the safety of the students they transport above all else," said Margo Sadowy, First Student location manager. "We are proud of how Latoya put her training into action when it mattered most. She is dedicated to the students she transports, and we are pleased Latoya was recognized for her actions."
