HUDSON, Ohio — School Bus Safety Company, Inc. (SBSC), North America’s premier school bus safety and training company, recently updated its Danger Zones safety program. SBSC is offering it for free to every school district and student transportation provider in North America, in order to keep kids safe. This program features new, high-quality video that addresses all aspects of reducing danger zone risk, with a far stronger focus on correct crossing procedures. The redesigned program will be available in time for National School Bus Safety Week, October 22-26.
“Keeping children safe on and around school buses is SBSC’s mission and the core of what we do,” stated Jeff Cassell, founder of SBSC. “Danger zones are the areas around the school bus where drivers have limited or no visibility. They are where a child is in most danger of getting hurt or killed. This refreshed Danger Zones program allows school districts and transportation providers to prevent danger zone accidents that are far too common near stopped school buses, where children are getting on and off the bus. It is critical for all transportation departments and providers across North America to review this program, because doing so can make a big difference in saving children’s lives.”
Added Chris Walls, head of SBSC, “Danger zone fatalities account for approximately 65 percent of all school bus-related fatalities and most occur when students have to cross the street. In the past 10 years, there have been 87 danger zone fatalities, and 46 of these were while the student was crossing the street. If we want to make the kids safer, we need to reduce crossing fatalities. The way to do this is by getting districts and contractors to not only receive a copy of the program, but to follow the safe practices identified in it.”
SBSC has found that the most important steps that school districts and transportation providers can take is to teach the school bus drivers about the danger zones, making them more aware and better equipped to keep kids safe on and around the bus.
SBSC’s new Danger Zones program will train drivers to:
- Give clear instructions to students
- Count the kids away
- Know where the kids are
- Clear the mirrors before they move
SBSC’s school bus driver safety and training programs are lauded throughout the industry. In addition to the Danger Zones program, which is part of SBSC’s acclaimed 25-subject Driver Training Course, the company has well over 100 available modules. These range from its nationally recognized Safety Leadership Program, to other topics such as: Bullying Prevention, Transporting Students with Special Needs, CDL Training and Student Safety, to name a few within its diverse online Learning Management System (LMS) catalogue.
