CARSON CITY, Nev. — The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is benefiting 15 of the state’s school districts as $1.73 million will purchase 17 new school buses to reduce nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and air toxins from communities.
“Most of these school districts have never had a new school bus, so this is very exciting for them,” said Diana Hollander, the pupil transportation program officer at the Nevada Department of Education. The funds will replace Blue Bird and International diesel buses with model years of 1991 or older; one even dates back to 1982. The U.S. EPA’s clean diesel grant program is administered by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection’s School Bus Replacement Program. All orders were submitted as of June 1, and school districts were expectied to begin receiving their new buses in October or November. The older buses will be removed from service and scrapped per stimulus rules. NDEP said the only school districts that did not qualify for new buses are Clark County serving Las Vegas and Carson City because both already have fleets consisting of late-model buses equipped with emissions control devices. NDEP received an additional $1.5 million in EPA clean diesel appropriations money for retrofitting the state’s remaining 1992 to 2004 model-year buses with emissions reducing equipment. To date, NDEP said it has received applications and determined that 431 buses statewide are eligible for the retrofits. |
