The U.S. Department of Transportation's published its CY 2011drug and alcohol random testing rates for certified, third-party testing of school bus drivers as well as all other transportation modes. The Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy listed a chart that outlines the annual minimum drug and alcohol random random testing rates established within all DOT Agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard for the coming year. School bus drivers fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The random drug testing rate for school bus drivers is 50 percent and the alcohol testing rate is 10 percent. Other segments covered by the updated policy are airplanes, trains, transit/metro, pipeline and hazardous materials, and marine. All CDL holders in any state nationwide that operate of school buses with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds and that have the capacity to carry 16 or more passengers are required to adhere to the drug and alcohol testing requirements. The random testing rates apply to urine specimens obtained by a third-party tester prior to a driver being hired, after a crash or following a positive test to return to work. |
