Blue Bird Corporation announced two recall campaigns for certain late-model Micro Bird Type A and All American Type D front engine school buses because they fail to comply with FMVSS 221 on school bus body joint strength. The Micro Bird recall, NHTSA Campaign ID09V479000, potentially affects 1,702 units with model years 2008 through 2010 that were manufactured from Aug. 28, 2007 through Oct. 29 of this year. Blue Bird discovered that an incorrect number of rivets may have been installed in the front roof cap that attaches to the front roof sheet, which could increase the risk of passenger injury during a crash, especially the rollover variety. Blue Bird will notify owners and will make repairs free of charge starting on or around Dec. 29, 2009. Meanwhile, certain 2010 model year All American D3 buses manufactured between Aug. 13 and Oct. 24 of this year were found to be missing joint adhesive for the inside panels adjacent to the rear center emergency door. The absence of the adhesive could also increase the risk of injury to students in a crash. This recall, NHTSA Campaign 09V481000, is expected to begin around Jan. 29, 2010.
