Blue Bird Corporation announced a recall campaign affecting 18,821 units of its model year 2004 through 2009 Type C conventional Vision school buses due improperly installed power cables running to the power distribution unit stud and the driver's control module stud.

The NHTSA recall states that the power cables may have been installed with the lug, or eyelet, flat side up. This can result in an electrical short and a fire, as vibration may wear the insulation, permitting contact between the bare lug and the PDU or DCM.

The vehicles affect were manufactured from Jan. 30, 2003 and Sept. 24, 2008.

Blue Bird said owners will be notified of repairs, which will be free of charge, on or around May 21, 2010. Blue Bird's internal recall campaign number is R10RW.

Meanwhile, Blue Bird also is recalling 195 model year 2004-2009 Vision non-school buses for the same problem.
