Some model year 2008 through 2010 multifunctional school activity buses fail to comply with FMVSS 222 because the seat barriers were constructed with the wrong material, reports manufacturer Startrans.

The company notified NHTSA of the recall of MFSABs manufactured between January 2008 and April 9 of this year. The recall campaign affects 130 units. The buses are equipped with Freedman seat barriers with part numbers 38764 and 15198.

The barrier for leg protection was built using an incorrect gauge of material, putting the barrier out of compliance with NHTSA's standard for school bus passenger seating and crash protection. Startrans added that seat occupants may not be adequately protected and their risk of injury is increased in the event of a crash.

Startrans was expected to notify customers this month of the repairs, which will be made free of charge.
