Collins Bus Corporation announced it is recalling some 210 of the company's Collins Grand and Super Bantam school buses as well as its line of Mid Bus Grand and Super Guide school buses to fix a problem with LED kits used in stop arm assemblies.

The federally-required stop arms are manufactured by Specialty Manufacturing, Inc. The model year 2008 and 2009 school buses affected were manufactured from March 31, 2008 through July 31, 2009. The LED kits that must be replaced per the NHTSA recall also affect both Ford and GM chassis.

Collins said a change to the wire used in the LED kits may reduce the life of the lights used in the stop arms. If the lights stop functioning, visibility of a stopped school bus could be decreased. As a result, students or other pedestrians could be struck by a passing vehicle.

The company added that it will notify owners that the LED kits will be replaced free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or around Oct. 11, 2010.
