Daimler Trucks announced it will fix nearly 3,000 Saf-T-Liner C2 and HDX school buses because engines may overheat and unexpectedly shut down.

The problem stems from software in EPA 2007-compliant Mercedes-Benz 900 Detroit Diesel engines installed in the Thomas Built Buses that were manufactured between Oct. 5, 2006 and May 24 of this year. The NHTSA recall states that the engine software "may not react properly to certain aftermarket treatment device fault codes."

As a result, the software could shut down one of the buses, or fail to shut down a vehicle that is equipped with an aftermarket device over-temp fault. This shutdown could lead to a crash and the overheating to an engine fire. Daimler added that Detroit Diesel will perform all repairs free of charge.

At this writing, NHTSA had yet to be notified when the recall will begin.
