More than 100 Type A small school buses are being recalled to because the warning lights do not alert the driver that the federally-mandated stop arm does not deploy at stops. The bus models affected by the NHTSA recall are the Girardin G5, Girardin MB-II, Micro Bird G5 and Micro Bird MB-II manufactured from January 2006 through April 5, 2011. The vehicles fail to conform with FMVSS 131, "School Bus Pedestrian Safety Devices." Micro Bird said the the driver could erroneously think that the school bus stop arm is deployed while the first set of four red lights are activated. This could increase the risk of a child injury - or worse - while loading or unloading the bus. Owners were expected to be notified of replacement lights with alarm, free of charge, by the end of next month. |
