CINCINNATI— First Student, Inc., in a statement today announced it will take over school bus transportation for Wichita Public Schools USD 259, a contract that includes managing fleet of 600 buses. The nation’s largest private contractor of student transportation services, First Student will service the area for the next seven years, taking over a contract previously awarded to Durham School Services, the company said. The new contract will begin on Aug. 1, 2010. First Student will manage the fleet from three locations, and all 600 buses will be equippied with onboard digital video cameras and Zonar GPS. The company said the GPS adds a further element of safety to First Student buses. In the event of an emergency, for example, dispatch can pinpoint the exact location of the but to provide quick response. In addition, the system helps reduce fuel usage and emissions by monitoring how long buses idle every day, said First Student. First Student’s buses will also include an electronic vehicle inspection component, which immediately identifies any maintenance issues during each driver’s daily safety inspections. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to serve Wichita Public Schools through this new school bus services contract,” said David Duke, senior vice president of sales for First Student. “Our industry-leading safety record, commitment to customer service and rigorous driver screening and training programs allow us to deliver the safest, most efficient transportation services the students and families of Wichita can rely upon each day.”
