The National Safety Council (NSC) aims to save an additional 10,000 lives and prevent 1 million injuries over the next five years, partially through a plan to advocate for graduated driver’s license laws and cell phone use bans, the safety advocacy group announced.

The plan and strategic guide follows a review by the Boston Consulting Group. Other elements of the plan include enhancing workplace safety and incorporating off-the-job safety training into member company workplaces.

According to the NSC, approximately 8,000 of the 40,000 auto-related deaths each year involve teen drivers. In addition to advocating for graduated driver’s licenses, the group will deliver training with Toyota, GM and other partners.

In order to reduce the estimated 80 percent of motor vehicle crashes where distractions are the contributing factor, NSC announced it will continue to support more state bans on cell phone usage. A new campaign will specifically focus on cell phone use by teen drivers and will call for bans on texting while driving.
