The National Transportation Safety Board announced it will hold a public Board meeting on June 22 to discuss its investigation into a multiple-fatality, single-vehicle tour bus accident that occurred last year near Dolan Springs, Ariz. While not involving a school bus, Charlie Hood, president of NASDPTS, said the school bus industry could learn valuable lessons. The incident occurred on Jan. 30, 2009 when a 2007 Chevrolet/Starcraft 29-passenger bus carrying 16 passengers and the driver crashed on U.S. Highway 93 on a return trip from Grand Canyon West to Las Vegas. The bus came to rest on the southbound side of the four-lane divided highway after veering out of its northbound lane, crossing the median and rolling over. Seven passengers were killed, and nine passengers and the driver sustained minor to serious injuries. The bus company lost its operating license as a result of the crash, though no immediate reason was given why. The NTSB is expected to address the issue during its board meeting. NTSB said the meeting, which will be simulcast on the Web, will determine probable cause of the crash and will consider proposed safety recommendations to reduce the likelihood of similar events occurring.
