Eligible school districts nationwide can apply for $50,000 in the latest school bus security, safety and efficiency equipment via a grant announced last month by NAPT and Zonar Systems.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to acquire what in our industry already is recognized as equipment with a track record of saving dollars and much more by improving safety, security and overall efficiency of school bus operations,” said Mike Martin, NAPT's executive director.

The grant will go to the best proposal for using Zonar's Electronic Fleet Management Solution, which includes the Electronic Vehicle Inspection Reporting system, or EVIR. The system helps district manage pre- and post-trip inspections as well as periodic security and maintenance inspections. It also integrates with Zonar's GPS and cellular technologies. In addition to enhancing inspections and maintenance, the system also monitors engine idling, vehicle speed and routing and time management efficiencies.

“The bottom line with Zonar is that it puts at your fingertips everything you need to know about every bus in your fleet,” Martin added.

Applications are due in mid-August and must be submitted by current NAPT members. The winning school district will be announced in early November at the NAPT Conference in Louisville, Ky.
