FirstGroup to Receive 2009 NSC Green Cross for Safety Medal

ANAHEIM, Calif. — FirstGroup has been named the 2009 recipient of the National Safety Council’s (NSC) Green Cross for Safety Medal. The announcement took place at the NSC’s 96th Annual Congress and Expo in Anaheim, Calif., and will be followed by the actual award presentation in April 2009 in Manhattan.

Carrollton School Bus Crash Survivor Subject of Upcoming Film

NEW YORK — On May 14, 1988, school bus passenger Harold Dennis was the victim of a drunk driving-related crash that resulted in the death of 27 people and left his face permanently disfigured. The Phoenix, a film based on his life that is currently in pre-production, will explore the path that his life has taken since that fatal night 20 years ago.

VTTI Releases Preliminary Results From Safety Survey

BLACKSBURG, Va.  — With Virginia Tech Transportation Institute's Special Safety Concerns of School Bus Drivers Survey complete and the responses tallied, the final report is currently under review and will be available in early 2009. The survey, which included a total of 198 contributors, was performed in conjunction with the Transportation Research Board.

Failures of Attention

WASHINGTON, DC — Failures on the part of bridge designers and inspectors led to the I-35 W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, Minn., that killed 13 people, injured 145 and left a chartered school bus with 52 children stranded last year, the NTSB determined in its final investigation report released yesterday.
