Situation Awareness: Responding to Crisis at the Speed of Life!

On Oct. 31, another terrorist attack occurred in Manhattan, New York, during which the suspect used a rented truck and ran over numerous bicyclists in the park. The attack with his vehicle ended when he ran into the right rear quarter panel of a school bus which had students and some adults on board. Two students and two staff members were injured in the attack and some of them were initially trapped inside the school bus from the extensive body damage caused by the attacker’s vehicle.

NHTSA Shares Updates on School Bus Safety Initiatives

Highway Safety Specialist Jeremy Gunderson informed attendees at the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Conference earlier this month on safety initiatives currently being worked on by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Children will drown if their school buses submerge in a body of water. They won’t have time to evacuate during a school bus fire. They will be forced off the school bus and into a less safe ride to and from school because of decreased passenger capacity. On average one student’s life will be saved a year while costs of new school buses skyrocket.
