The Texas Education Agency announced that it is accepting applications for grant awards under the voluntary School Bus Seat Belt Grant Program, which allows school districts to defray the cost of purchasing new school buses equipped with lap/shoulder restraints during the current school year.

A report nearly four years in the making after a horrific, fatal school bus crash in Huntsville, Ala., in 2006 is expected by the beginning of next month to layout recommendations to Gov. Bob Riley and the state Department of Education on the alternatives available to school districts when it comes to school bus seat belts.

Funding for Texas Seat Belt Law Finally on its Way PDF Print E-mail

seatbeltThree years ago, the Texas legislature passed only the second school bus lap/shoulder belt bill in the nation's history. The law is now in effect and at least some money is available to school districts, though the Texas Education Agency still must work out details on how to distribute the funds.
