Bus Accident Data
T
he response is predictable. "There's been a school bus accident."
As those words crackle over the airwaves and on the Internet,
the attention of parents, law enforcement, school officials
and others instantly focuses on the accident scene. Anxious
parents worry that their child will be one of the accident victims.
Clearly,
school bus accidents are a matter of great concern. Listed here,
users will find several items of information about this subject.
Foremost among them is data from an
April 2002 Report to Congress titled "School Bus Safety:
Crashworthiness Research."
In
this report, NHTSA reviewed all the crashes where passengers were
killed in crashes involving 1977 through 2001 model year school
buses, including those in school-related and non-school-related
use for 1990 through 2000. There were 55 such crashes during the
11-year period, in which 83 passengers were killed. During this
period, the annual average is 5 fatal-passenger crashes and 7.5
passenger fatalities.
Additionally,
NHTSA annually generates data about highway crashes and accidents
involving all modes of highway travel, including other school
bus crash data by year.
We also provide a link to 25 school bus-specific
Highway Accident Reports from the National Transportation Safety
Board, an independent safety agency that studies catastrophic
accidents to learn what caused the accident.
Also
listed here are data STN researched and tabulated about train-school
bus collisions dating back more than century in which 181
deaths and 546 injuries to school bus passengers occurred.
