School
Bus Safety Recall Campaigns:
January, 1990
-- April, 1995
In May, 1995,
U.S. SecDot Frederico Pena issued his second warning about the dangers
of school bus handrails. That month, in an effort to recall all
school buses that potentially might have handrails that could contribute
to this problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
published a list of all recalls it has issued since January, 1990.
NHTSA wanted to cover all recalls that might even remotely influence
correction of the mounting problem of school bus handrail-related
fatalities. Many of the recalls by the 22 companies listed here
have nothing directly to do with the handrail problem, but were
included to spread the net as widely as possible.
