The Bus Mechanic

By George F. Horne

July 22, 1999

We fix the buses in our fleet:
Take down, put back together.
We have to keep them on the road
No matter what the weather.

Impossible tasks, we are asked to do,
To keep the buses rolling.
It takes desire and skill and sweat.
And sometimes some cajoling.

We operate behind the scenes,
Outside the public's eye;
But if a school bus fails to run,
We hear the loud outcry.

No parts delay, no lack of help,
No missing equipment or tool
Is excuse enough for us to say,
"We can't get kids to school."

We fix the buses in our fleet:
Take down, put back together.
We have to keep them on the road
No matter what the weather.

We hope all drivers do their part
To let us know when they
Suspect a problem with a bus.
We'll fix it, come what may.
