The IFC, the world's leading mobility filtration conference, targets users and suppliers of ground, sea, and air mobility filtration environments by presenting technical papers. This year the subject is mobility filtration issues with emphasis on real-world problem solving, applications, future user requirements, and applicable test methodology. Dr. Yang will discuss the paper "Understanding Emulsified Water Filtration from Diesel Fuels," which he authored with Stephen Larson and Steve Wagner, also of Donaldson. The paper explores high diesel fuel surfactancy, particularly for additized ultralow sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD), and found that a decrease fuel/water interfacial tension (IFT) and lowered microseparometer rating (MSEP) for increased surfactancy. This effectively caused an increased stability of water-in-fuel emulsion. This research concluded that filtration becomes more difficult with lower IFT and MSEP and a decreased size of the water droplet, even with composite coalescing materials. With careful material engineering, research found it is possible to filter emulsified water with over 95% efficiency at very low IFT and conventional fuel flow rate. Additionally, it was confirmed that media face velocity significantly affects the filtration efficiency. Dr.Yang recommends the consideration of a test standard with specified fuel proprieties such as IFT and MSEP.
