“Cyber-Bullying:” Dealing with the New “Candid Camera” on the Bus

Nov. 25, 2007 -- Writing in the November issue of Legal Routes,™ Editor Peggy Burns cautions school transporters how the use of mobile camera phones by students on the school bus is leading to “cyber-bullying” with videos (some staged for “cinematic” value) being posted on web sites such as My.Break.com and other Internet sites.

In the article Burns offers this early-warning advice: “When combined with today's ever-present cell phone, the phenomenon suggests the need for policies in all school environments, including the school bus, as well as revision of discipline procedures.”

Burns, a nationally recognized attorney and consultant on school transportation law and policy, writes about several cases involving the use of cell phones and cell phone cameras; cell phone policies; and disciplines imposed. As is customary with reports in Legal Routes,™ Burns concludes with lessons to be learned from the activity or litigation.
